Animals have always been important to me, but the isolation of the pandemic lock-down has brought to light just how much richer they make my life. Without the daily social interactions I had been used to, my life as an artist working alone in my studio has become even more solitary. But we are so fortunate to live on a ranch with cats, dogs, goats, and chickens. My studio constantly has life in it in the form of my two dogs: their presence brings joy to long days and devoted companionship. Our goats make the perfect sketching and painting models, with their guardian dogs sitting by my side in the pasture and occasionally (shyly) consenting to pose. The chickens play the soundtrack of my days, from the heralding of dawn that Augustus the rooster proclaims every morning to the hallelujah chorus the hens cackle every time they lay an egg. Canada geese fly overhead to the open water of a nearby lake, and the neighbor's cows placidly chew their cud as I pass by on my morning walk. Companionship comes in many forms, feathered and furred not the least among them.
